Kokee Rooster and Chicken Infestation Spreads Like Wild Fire
One day in 2009, we decided to head to Kokee with the family for some extra laid back peace and quiet. We packed a picnic and planned to hang out and rest peacefully in the great wide open space near the Kokee Museum. While driving up the hill to Kokee State Park, we talked with our kids about how quiet and beautiful it was the last time we went for a few nights visit, it was so much fun. Upon our arrival at the Kokee Lodge parking lot and museum area we were shocked to see the huge increase in chicken and roosters hanging around the park compared to years past.
From the pictures, it’s easy to picture how our picnic went from a peaceful thought to an obnoxiously loud crowing concert. * BUY TRAPS found on our parent pages – www.RoosterTrap.com & www.ChickenTrap.com. * How about those invasive plant species some people are so worried about? Every time the feral birds take a dump they are potentially leaving a trail of invasive seeds? While the State does so much to attract tourist to Kauai and other islands, it is beyond us how they just let these birds breed by the thousands (just add water) and run the havoc they are spreading all over the islands.

Is this all we will hear up at Kokee in the years to come?

If people don’t get active, this problem will just get worse. I am the coqui frog hot-line for Volcano on the big island and we get them one at a time, every night. If we didn’t, we’d be over-run with coqui like the rest of east Hawaii.
Unlike other traps, these are big enough to catch the alpha roosters that won’t go near the smaller ones.
I guess you should talk about Hawaii’s out of control wild chicken and rooster problems to the French specialist Henry Michel.
Now you make me look at roosters in a whole new way
I always liked them when I would visit my grandma’s house and take pretty pictures of her rooster. She and the roosters are gone but for those of us city folk who still crave the country, I found a nice site with calendars of roosters and chickens. Check out the “extraordinary chickens”. I never knew a chicken could look like that.

Sorry but I have to contradict myself, the old roosters won’t go near the trap. I’d sure appreciate any and all ideas on how to lure them in.
We just returned from our first visit to Hawaii(Kauai). Beautiful island. If not for the roosters I would not hesitate to go back or recommend it to others but the crowing all day and all night means we probably won’t be back. It seems to me that it is an easy problem to resolve but the powers that be do not think it is a problem. It IS a problem and it is costing your economy a lot of money. The resort we were at was less than half full.
I enjoyed reading your chicken blog. Please read mine.
Here in Philippines, if you saw a rooster and don;t belongs to any one. We are trying to catch it.
